About the initiative
The Australian Government contributed $2 million to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). CEPI is a global initiative to develop vaccines to fight new diseases that could become pandemics. A pandemic is the worldwide spread of a new infectious disease. CEPI also plans to make such vaccines available to everyone who needs them, particularly those living in poor countries.
Why it was important
Global air travel makes it very easy for infectious diseases to spread around the world within days. Australia needs to be part of a global, co-ordinated response to pandemics.
We contributed to CEPI to help prepare Australia and the globe for future pandemics.
Goals
The purpose of this research funding was to:
- develop vaccines suitable for humans that are ready before a pandemic begins
- ensure Australia and the world are prepared for future pandemics, rather than reacting to them.
Who we worked with
The Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) funded this initiative.
The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) used the funding for its program.
Status
The National Security Against Pandemic Risk initiative has been finalised.
