About the Emerging Priorities and Consumer-Driven Research initiative
The Emerging Priorities and Consumer-Driven Research initiative will provide $653.6 million over 10 years between 2024–25 and 2033–2034.
This initiative will support research on addressing emerging priority health needs and areas of unmet need. It will:
- improve patient care
- translate new discoveries into clinical practice
- encourage researchers to work together with consumers.
Why it is important
This initiative supports the development of new diagnoses, treatments and cures, and the translation of new discoveries into clinical practice. It aims to assist Australians to benefit from new treatments for conditions that are in emerging priority areas or areas of unmet need.
Objectives
The objectives of this initiative are to support research that improves patient care and translation of new discoveries, and encourage collaboration between consumers and researchers.
Meeting our objectives
We will monitor the initiative in accordance with the principles and approach detailed in the MRFF Monitoring, evaluation and learning strategy.
Who we work with
The Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) funds this initiative.
The Childhood Mental Health Research Plan Expert Advisory Panel (EAP) advised on investments under this initiative to improve the mental health of children.
The Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) Research Plan EAP advised on investments under this initiative to improve outcomes for people experiencing PASC. PASC is also known as long COVID.
The Primary Health Research Plan EAP advised on primary health care investments under this and the Primary Health Care Research initiative.
Our Health and Medical Research Office oversees this and other MRFF initiatives.
The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the Department of Industry, Science and Resources administer this initiative.
