About the initiative
The Biomedical Translation Bridge (BTB) funds and nurtures early-stage health and medical research to reach proof-of-concept with the potential to attract further capital and support. It is now part of the Medical Research Commercialisation initiative under the MRFF 10-year plan.
Why it is important
The BTB helps researchers transform their ideas into new treatments to help tomorrow’s patients.
Early-stage research is the first step towards future medical treatments. Taking a project from an idea to a final product is a long and expensive process. The BTB helps Australian medical researchers develop life-saving medicines, devices and treatments.
The BTB helps boost overall investment in biomedical research. This is because projects also attracted matched funding from other sources.
Goals
The BTB addresses key national gaps in Australia’s research sector and support three goals:
- increased commercialisation focus and expertise in early stage research and decision-making across Australia
- accelerated development, and improved success
- helped to identify existing and new sources of capital investment to bolster awareness and interest in early research investment opportunities
Meeting our goals
After a competitive process, the Government chose MTPConnect to deliver the BTB. MTPConnect is a not-for-profit organisation formed to accelerate the growth of Australia’s medical technologies, biotechnologies and pharmaceuticals sector.
Who we work with
The BTB is part of the Australian Government’s Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).
MTPConnect has partnered with the following organisations to deliver the BTB:
- BioCurate, founded by the University of Melbourne and Monash University to boost development of new medicines
- UniQuest, the University of Queensland’s specialist centre for commercialising intellectual property
- Medical Device Partnering Program (MDPP), led by Flinders University to turn ideas for medical devices into realities
