Innovative Care Programme

This program supports flexible ways of providing care where mainstream services cannot meet needs. It currently funds 7 innovative projects that focus on younger people with disabilities. The program stopped funding new projects in 2006.

About the program

The Australian Government set up the Innovative Care Programme in 2001–02 under the Aged Care Act 1997.

It provides flexible services where mainstream aged care services cannot meet the needs of a location or target group.

The program stopped funding new projects on 25 May 2006.

Projects

At 30 June 2024, there were 7 projects operating under this program, with 13 innovative care places.

These projects started in 2003 and 2004. They were designed for younger people with disabilities who:

  • lived in state-funded supported accommodation services
  • were at risk of entering residential aged care

Funding

The Australian Government pays a flexible care subsidy to Innovative Care Programme providers.

The subsidy is:

  • on a per person per day basis
  • a top-up to state government funding for supported accommodation
  • indexed every year on 1 July.

To find out more, see Schedule 1 Subsection 104(1) and Subsection 104(2) in the Aged Care (Subsidy, Fees and Payments) Determination 2014.
