About the program
The FNHFTP will review all our funded activities to identify services that can improve health outcomes for First Nations peoples. The program aims to pass on the recommended activities to First Nations-led organisations to deliver.
Why it is important
We understand that First Nations peoples are more likely to achieve better health outcomes when they receive health care from First Nations-led organisations, rather than from non-First Nations-led organisations. We also understand the need to increase the capacity of First Nations-led organisations to deliver health services to First Nations peoples.
In October 2022, Minister Butler announced this program as an opportunity to better align our work with the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. The FNHFTP supports Priority Reform 2 ‘Building the Community-Controlled Sector’.
Goals
We set up the program to improve First Nations peoples’ health outcomes and strengthen the community-controlled health sector. The program aims to:
- develop a transition roadmap towards First Nations-led organisations health service delivery for First Nations peoples
- develop a framework to strengthen First Nations-led organisations to deliver health services to First Nations peoples
- transform the way we work to continue this important program.
Meeting our goals
The FNHFTP will review and identify activities which are designed for First Nations peoples that could be delivered to them by First Nations-led organisations. After the review, we will develop short, medium and long-term transition plans. We will then focus on strategies to improve First Nations peoples' access to broader population-based and demand-driven programs such as aged care.
The review will also look at how to increase the capacity of First Nations-led organisations in the aged care sector. This work will inform our necessary system-level changes to work towards our First Nations-led organisations approach. For example, it can help us plan for funding to support the organisations to provide their healthcare services.
This work informs current transition opportunities, such as the Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarship Scheme.
Who we work with
The First Nations Health Funding Transition Advisory Group will guide this important work. It is co-chaired by us and the community-controlled health sector.
