Dementia Training Program

The Dementia Training Program offers a national approach to accredited education, upskilling, and professional development in dementia care.

About the program

The Dementia Training Program provides:

  • accredited dementia care training courses which are free to eligible care workers in residential, respite, community care or wider health services.
  • tailored onsite training to aged care providers, including a dementia skills and environment audit, followed by a tailored training package. These services may include a fee.
  • an online training portal to complement face-to-face training delivery.

The program has been expanded from July 2022 to include:

  • advanced dementia training and support for personal care workers to build local leadership in dementia care.
  • a network of communities of practice to offer peer support for dementia care leaders and embed best practice in their organisations.
  • training to manage the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia and minimise the use of restraint (restrictive practices).
  • a national Dementia Training Standards Framework and Dementia Training Pathways to improve and standardise dementia training and education.

Why it is important

The program is important because all people living with dementia should receive high-quality, evidence-based care in every setting and location.

Goals

The program’s goals are to improve the care and wellbeing of people living with dementia, and the wellbeing of staff delivering their care.

It does this through providing or brokering nationally consistent, high-quality knowledge translation services to aged and health care staff, managers and other professionals.
