Becoming a COVID-19 vaccine provider

General practices and pharmacies across Australia can administer COVID-19 vaccines under the National COVID-19 Vaccines Program.

Who can join the program

General practices

Many general practices provide access to COVID-19 vaccinations for their local communities.

Contact your local Primary Health Network (PHN) to find out how your general practice can take part in the program. To join, your practice must:

  • hold a valid accreditation (or be undergoing accreditation) through the National General Practice Accreditation Scheme, or
  • administer vaccines as part of the National Immunisation Program.

A supervising GP must accept full responsibility for services provided under the COVID-19 vaccination suitability assessment Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs)

Most ACCHSs provide COVID-19 vaccination services.

ACCHSs can provide culturally specific vaccination care for regular clients and others in the community.

Community pharmacies

Many community pharmacies provide COVID-19 vaccinations.

The Pharmacy Programs Administrator helps community pharmacies join the COVID-19 vaccine program. To join, your practice must:

  • be approved to dispense pharmaceutical benefits as part of the PBS defined in Section 90 of the National Health Act 1953 (Cwlth) (Section 90 Pharmacy)
  • hold a valid accreditation with Quality Care Pharmacy Program (QCPP) (Community Pharmacies only).

Read more about the program and how your pharmacy can become involved.

Training for vaccine providers

The COVID-19 Vaccination Training Program (CVTP) ended on 30 September 2023. It is no longer mandatory to complete the CVTP to participate in the National COVID-19 Vaccine Program. We will no longer create new training modules for the program.

All COVID-19 vaccination providers must have authority to vaccinate in their state or territory. As a provider, you must have completed the required immunisation training for your profession.

All primary care providers participating in the National COVID-19 Vaccine Program must continue to meet their relevant professional standards and be practising within their lawful scope of professional practice under state and territory legislation.

For more information on immunisation training and provider requirements, please contact your state or territory immunisation health service.
