About the program
We are investing $166 million to establish a new Australian Cancer Nursing and Navigation Program. The program will ensure all people with cancer have access to high quality and culturally safe care, irrespective of their cancer type or location.
This program includes multiple components:
- The Cancer Navigation Service
- All-cancer nurse service
- Child and Youth Cancer Hub
- Specialist telehealth service.
Program components
The Cancer Navigation Service
The Cancer Navigation Service will connect people to multidisciplinary telehealth teams and refer people to clinically appropriate information and services. The service will be led by Cancer Council Australia.
All-cancer nurse service
The all-cancer nurse service, led by the McGrath Foundation in partnership with the cancer sector, will deliver around 250 Commonwealth-funded all-cancer nurses in health and hospital services across Australia. This is in addition to the existing Commonwealth-funded prostate cancer nurses that the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia deliver.
Child and Youth Cancer Hub
The Child and Youth Cancer Hub will deliver cancer navigation, support and counselling services for children and young people with cancer and their families. Canteen will lead the Hub in collaboration with Camp Quality and Redkite.
Specialist telehealth service
The specialist telehealth service will provide specialist information, support and advice that is tailored to the unique needs of people with particular tumour types. The service will be delivered by the cancer NGO sector.
Cancer Patient Support Program
We are also investing $16.5 million to establish a Cancer Patient Support Program. This program will lead the way to better outcomes for patients in priority populations and focus on increasing equity across tumour types.
