eLearning for older people, their families and carers

This learning material is for older people, their families and carers who are currently receiving or are seeking government-funded aged care services.

These learning modules will help you better understand the changes introduced in the new Aged Care Act and what they mean for you. You can download a checklist of training opportunities so you can keep track of your learning.

Module 1: Your guide to the Aged Care Act 2024 – Understanding and adapting

This module will help you, your family and carers better understand what is changing under the new Aged Care Act from 1 November 2025.

Duration: This course will take approximately 20minutes to complete.

In this learning module, you will learn about:

  • changes across your aged care journey
  • understanding ageism and why it matters
  • your rights in care
  • what aged care services will look like
  • accessing aged care
  • quality and safety in care
  • decision-making and empowerment
  • speaking up and staying safe.

Module 2: Aligning to changes – implementing the Aged Care Act 2024 

This module will help you understand:

  • your rights in everyday care
  • when the new changes are happening
  • what you need to do to get ready.

Duration: This course will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

In this learning module, you will learn about:

  • understanding your rights in care
  • supporting the needs of all older people
  • decision-making, with or without support – your choice, your control
  • accessing government-funded aged care services
  • key changes to residential aged care
  • key changes to in-home aged care
  • navigating complaints and raising concerns.

Module 2 is available to complete now.

Module 3: Embedding best practice in the aged care system

This module is for aged care providers and workers to help them translate the new Act into operational reality. It will be delivered in three releases over September and October 2025. Your provider will share with you any relevant resources released as part of Module 3.

Other learning resources

Community information sessions 

We have partnered with COTA Australia and the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) to deliver engagement sessions on the new Act and Support at Home across September and October 2025. 

This will include:  

  • 8 community information sessions around Australia (1 in each state and territory), with options to connect virtually from regional locations  
  • communication and sector engagement, and   
  • communities of practice opportunities following the sessions to answer questions.  

At these sessions, you can: 

  • learn about the new Act and what it means in practice 
  • understand what will change in the aged care system 
  • ask questions and receive clear information 
  • share your views and experiences to help guide the rollout.
