About the program
The TROMPs program provides access to Medicare rebates to doctors who:
- were licensed or registered as medical practitioners in Australia before 1 January 1997
- were either a temporary resident or a resident of New Zealand on 18 October 2001
- do not have fellowship, so are subject to section 19AA of the Health Insurance Act 1973.
The TROMPs program has closed to new entrants. We are not accepting new applications.
We placed all eligible doctors on this program automatically. These doctors will continue to have the same unrestricted access to Medicare that they had in October 2001.
Why it is important
The TROMPs program addresses an unintended consequence of a legislative change that would have removed Medicare rebates access for long-term temporary resident doctors.
Goals of the program
The program ensures that changes to the Health Insurance Act 1973 do not unfairly disadvantage long-term temporary resident doctors who do not have fellowship.
