Guide to Aged Care Law

Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission

The Commission regulates the delivery of funded aged care services and supports the Commissioner and Complaints Commissioner in their governance responsibilities.

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (the Commission) is the main regulator for the aged care system.

[Chapter 5 – Part 3 – Division 1]

Under the Act, the Commission’s responsibilities are mostly the same as in the previous aged care system. But there are some changes to the structure of the organisation. The Act also improves the range of tools available to the Commission in regulating the aged care system – see Chapter 3 and Chapter 6.

As the regulator, the Commission has an important role in governing the aged care system. Within the Commission, there are 2 specific roles that support key aspects of governance:

  • the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commissioner (the Commissioner)
  • the Complaints Commissioner.

The Commission’s main role is to help the Commissioner and the Complaints Commissioner with their responsibilities.
