Children living in remote communities are up to 2.5 times more likely to be overweight than children in more urban areas (Health and Wellbeing Queensland). Community stores which are far away from urban areas can find it harder to supply fresh produce like fruits, vegetables and meat.
Over 30 healthcare workers, dietitians, and nutritionists from across Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia are currently meeting every week to work out how they can help. They are looking for ways to work with local community store staff to encourage healthy food habits.
