For routine Cervical Screening Tests, asymptomatic patients should be given the option of a healthcare provider-collected test or a self-collected test.
Evidence shows self-collection is a more appealing, appropriate, and sensitive screening option for many never or under-screened patients and it is just as accurate at detecting HPV as a healthcare provider-collected test.
You can ensure the self-collect option is an available choice for eligible patients during their routine cervical screening by having the self-collection swabs ready at your practice.
Contact your laboratory to ensure you have the correct swabs and instructions to offer self-collection.
Education and Webinars
The Department of Health and Aged Care has funded the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer (ACPCC) to get healthcare providers up to speed on self-collection.
ACPCC will be running webinars (see below), delivering CPD accredited online learning modules, and offering healthcare provider clinical resources, as well as patient resources.
Two webinars will be held for GPs, nurses, midwives and other healthcare providers with an interest in cervical screening:
- Tuesday 11 June, 6pm AEST
- Wednesday 19 June, 7:30pm AEST
