About listeriosis
Listeria bacteria (Listeria monocytogenes) are widespread in the environment. Infection with Listeria bacteria can cause an illness called listeriosis. Some foods are more likely to be contaminated by Listeria than others. Most people who get sick with listeriosis have eaten contaminated food.
