Role
The National HTA Chairs Committee oversees the relationships between the key committees for medicines, medical services and medical devices. It facilitates regular discussions between committees at the HTA policy level and helps to coordinate developments related to health technologies.
The committee advises on:
- models of best practice to ensure that Australia’s HTA is world-class
- emerging trends and developments in domestic and international HTA
- development of HTA solutions
- improvements to technologies
- building skills and expertise in HTA within our department
- opportunities to share expertise with other Commonwealth and state governments to improve the efficiency of the Australian health system
- HTA investments under the Preventive and Public Health Research initiative of the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF)
- any other HTA matters we refer to the committee.
It will also promote:
- consumer engagement in HTA processes
- consumer feedback to inform decision-making
- efficient HTA processes improved through shared processes between the committees and cross committee support.
Advice to Health and Medical Research Office
The committee also advises the Health and Medical Research Office on the strategic priorities for research investment under the HTA stream. This is part of the Preventive and Public Health Research initiative funded by MRFF.
In this advisory role, the committee:
- identifies, discusses, prioritises, and refines grant opportunities under the HTA stream
- supports the MRFF to monitor grants that are relevant to HTAs
- helps with other work as needed.

Members
The Australian Government appoints various HTA committees. The membership of the National HTA Chairs Committee is made up of the chairs from the:
- Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC)
- Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC)
- Medical Devices and Human Tissue Advisory Committee (MDHTAC)
- Advisory Committee on Medicines (ACM)
- Advisory Committee on Medical Devices (ACMD)
- HTA Consumer Consultative Committee (CCC)
- Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) Reviews Advisory Committee (MRAC).
Meetings
The committee meets up to 3 times a year, with extra meetings held as needed.
