Human papillomavirus (HPV) immunisation data

Learn about HPV immunisation data and see the tables for HPV data from 2020 onwards.

About HPV immunisation data

The data available on HPV immunisation is from the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR). From 31 December 2018, the National HPV Vaccination Program Register was de-commissioned. Find pre-2018 HPV immunisation data at Archived HPV Immunisation Data.

A requirement exists for vaccination providers to send HPV vaccination records to the AIR, operated by Services Australia.

Presentation of HPV immunisation data

Data from the AIR is sourced and assessed at 15 years of age. The National Immunisation Program outlines the vaccine dosing schedules. Please see the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine page for more information.

We break the immunisation coverage rates into the 4 most requested categories for reporting purposes. These are:

  • year
  • quarter
  • sex
  • state and territory
  • First Nations status.

We report data by calendar quarter and annualise by calendar year based on quarterly coverage data.

From February 2023, HPV vaccines were administered as a single-dose vaccine rather than a two-dose vaccine. This change contributed to the rise in vaccination rates.

Vaccinations are often delivered through school based programs and scheduled by jurisdictions and schools. Data in some quarters may be lower as a result.

Non binary adolescents are not included in the reporting due to the low numbers and the inability to determine the population.

HPV immunisation coverage rates – annualised

This table shows annualised HPV vaccination coverage rates for 2020–2025.

From February 2023, HPV vaccines were administered as a single-dose vaccine rather than a two-dose vaccine. This change contributed to the rise in vaccination rates.

  • The National HPV Vaccination Program initially provided quadrivalent HPV vaccine for all females aged 12–26 years as at mid–2007 (school program commenced April 2007 and GP/community program in July 2007) until end December 2009. From 2009 the program offered HPV vaccination routinely to females in the first year of high school (usually at 12–13 years). From 2013, males were also offered HPV vaccination routinely in the first year of high school (age 12–13 years), with a catch-up program available for males aged 14–15 years in 2013 and 2014.
  • As the ages of students in the first year of high school varies between jurisdictions, age 15 is used as the age for routine review of vaccination coverage that provides the best comparison to allow for these varying ages in administration, as per World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations.
