A career in aged care gives you the opportunity to spend quality time with those you’re supporting. There’s a career for everyone – cleaners, cooks, social coordinators, nurses, gardeners to name a few. Careers in aged care offer work-life balance and the flexibility to fit in with your lifestyle.

Becoming an aged care worker

There are multiple pathways to join the aged care workforce for:

  • students
  • job searchers
  • professionals.

Requirements for aged care workers

There are currently no minimum standard qualifications for some entry-level aged-care roles. However, many organisations and roles will require a formal qualification.

Before you can work in the sector, you will need a worker screening-check.

Depending on your role, state or territory and organisation, you may also need an:

  • up-to-date COVID-19 and/or influenza vaccination
  • Working with Vulnerable People check
  • Working with Children check.

Education and training opportunities for aged care workers

People interested in exploring a career in aged care may be eligible for Fee-Free TAFE, where they can study without having to pay tuition fees. Free courses include:

  • a Diploma of Nursing
  • certificates – for example, the Certificate III in Individual Support
  • short courses.

There are multiple pathways into the aged care sector for:

  • nursing students
  • enrolled nurses
  • registered nurses.

Requirements for aged care nurses

Aged care nurses must have a qualification, such as a:

  • Diploma of Nursing (enrolled nurse)
  • Advanced Diploma of Nursing (enrolled nurse)
  • Bachelor of Nursing (registered nurse).
  • Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia approved program of study (nurse practitioners). 

Nurses must formally register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

The Aged Care Transition to Practice Program supports new aged care nurses with training and professional development opportunities.
