Grants

Grants help us to improve the health and wellbeing of all Australians.

Grants

Grants help us to improve the health and wellbeing of all Australians.

Our grants fund people and organisations to deliver projects and services across health, disability and aged care. They help turn policy into real outcomes that benefit the community and support government priorities.

How we administer grants

We administer grants under the Australian Government grants framework to make sure funding is fair, transparent and used where it’s needed most.

We follow the Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles. They set the Australian Government's requirements for how grants are designed, awarded and managed. This ensures transparency, accountability and value for money in delivering policy outcomes.

We are also committed to administering community sector grants in line with the Community Sector Grants Engagement Framework. This supports the government’s initiative to give community sector organisations:

  • greater funding certainty
  • clearer and more timely communication
  • reduced administrative burden
  • stronger outcomes-focused grant design.

We use grant agreements approved by the Department of Finance. They set out the terms and conditions of the funding, including what activities will be delivered, when payments will be made, and what reporting is required.

Who administers grants

We work with grants hubs to administer grants.

  • The Community Grants Hub administers community-based grants on our behalf.
  • The Business Grants Hub and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) administer Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) grants.

How we run grant rounds

We manage grant rounds to give organisations time to apply and plan.

We aim to:

  • keep grant rounds open for at least 6 weeks from the date of publication on GrantConnect
  • avoid opening or closing rounds over the Christmas period
  • avoid opening new rounds in early January.

Current grantees

We manage transitions to reduce disruption for organisations and provide greater certainty of funding.

Where possible we:

  • give around 3 months notice if funding will not continue
  • give around 3 months notice if agreements are ending at the end of the financial year
  • finalise all agreements on time and where applicable start a new agreement with you (if you are short-listed for further funding) before the end of the current agreement
  • pay agreed indexation within the first quarter of the financial year.

Grant connected policies

National Redress Scheme grant connected policy

The National Redress Scheme for Institutional Child Sexual Abuse grant connected policy restricts access to grant funding for institutions that fail to join the scheme. We monitor this through the eligibility criteria in our grant opportunity guidelines. See the National Redress Scheme for more information.

Australian Industry Participation Plan grant connected policy

Companies awarded Australian Government grants of $20 million or more are subject to Commonwealth Australian Industry Participation (AIP) requirements. This grant connected policy gives Australian businesses opportunities to bid to supply goods and services on government-funded projects. See Australian Industry Participation for more information.

Grant reporting

We make a lot of information about our grants available to the public. Our grant reporting includes:

Artificial intelligence (AI)

We do not use AI to automate decisions. Our people remain fully accountable for the recommendations they provide and the decisions they make.

We have an AI transparency statement which guides our approach to the safe and ethical use of AI.
