Volunteer visitor stories – Amber and Sue

Amber didn’t know anyone when she moved to Darwin. When she started visiting Sue as a volunteer visitor, she had her first friend. Their friendship has deepened through their mutual love of music.

Today is a beautiful day.

The sun is shining.

When I met you, I think that was the second week I came to Darwin, so I don't have any friends.

When I met you, I got friends and we got friends which can play music together.

Yeah, that's lovely.

Since her husband's health declined, Sue has been living by herself at home in

Darwin.

To ease the loneliness, she receives a regular volunteer visitor, Amber, who brings company, comfort and connection.

What do the visit means to you?

It helps me to get into another time and space, especially with the sadness of my husband being in care and the grieving, really, that I've been going through the last few years and still going through.

So it's very encouraging for me.

Yeah.

Tonight's such a beautiful night.

Good night.

Well, this one here is called China Girl.

China Girl.

That's me.

I know.

It smells so good.

It's like, like a Chinese girl.

Sue and Amber bonded over a shared love of music, and as their friendship grew,

they opened up about their life experiences.

If you could sign a message to younger self, what you would say?

I would say love yourself, Sue.

Yeah.

Why is that All right?

I didn't feel loved when I was young.

It was in a way.

I've had terrible sad and we all have sad times, but I appreciate my life and I wouldn't change it because I think, like with you as well, what you've gone through it, it makes you what the person you are For now,

I can't tell my parents that I am a lesbian and I can't tell them I am actually already married in Australia.

That's a really, really big secret that's hiding in my deep heart, in my mind.

I always hope that oh, no, one of my my mum or my dad, they can be my witness in my marriage.

But I can't do that.

But after I met you and you can be the witness of my marriage, that really,

really means a lot for us.

Yeah.

Really appreciate for that.

Well, you can see the love there between you and it was very beautiful.

I felt quite honoured.

While I did feel honoured, you bring joy.

You bring joy?

Yes.

After one of your visits, it uplifts me.

I know what we can do.

How about when you come round, you can get me back practicing my keyboard?

I think it would do.

Yeah.

Right.

You're on.

On.

We're in.

Guitar for you.

Piano for me.

OK.

Right.

Let's go and have a look at this big thing over here.
