9.10 First Nations Disability Forum

Recommendation 9.10 said governments should create a First Nations Disability Forum.

All governments are working with First Nations people with disability to develop different options for a First Nations Disability Forum or other methods for shared decision-making as said in Recommendation 9.10 from the DRC.

The Forum is expected to be a way for governments and First Nations people with disability to work together to improve supports and services.

On 13 December 2024, First Nations people, First Nations organisations and government representatives met to discuss this recommendation.

From 12 December 2024 to 25 February 2025 the Australian Government also invited people to share their thoughts about creating a Forum.

This recommendation is in progress.

9.11 Building on the Disability Sector Strengthening Plan

Recommendation 9.11 said governments should work with First Nations people to strengthen the Disability Sector Strengthening Plan (DSSP).

The DSSP outlines how we will improve the community-controlled disability sector.

The community-controlled disability sector supports the rights of First Nations people with disability and helps them participate in all aspects of life.

Governments are evaluating the DSSP to help us decide next steps for the plan.

Governments have also progressed priorities listed in the DSSP.

The Government is funding the National Disability Footprint program.

The program was designed by an organisation called First Peoples Disability Network (FPDN).

It helps governments understand the needs, expectations and priorities of First Nations people with disability.

This will help make policies more inclusive.

Further work is required for this recommendation.

9.12 Disability-inclusive cultural safety standards

Recommendation 9.12 is about the cultural safety of disability services for First Nations people.

A First Nations Disability Forum is expected to play an important role in creating disability-inclusive cultural safety standards.

Cultural safety is a priority in the NDIS First Nations Strategy 2025-30.

Cultural safety will also be included in the NDIS Practice Standards.

The NDIS Practice standards explain how registered NDIS providers should deliver services.

Further work is required for this recommendation.
