12.2 Implementation of the Final report recommendations

Recommendation 12.2 said governments need to share progress updates on how they are going with making the changes recommended by the Disability Royal Commission.

In July 2024 Disability Ministers agreed to a national plan to track and report on how they are working on the Disability Royal Commission’s recommendations.

All governments will report every 6 months to Disability Ministers and the community.

The Prime Minister and other Cabinet Ministers will get an update every year.

The reports will include updates from all governments.

They will show people how we are going with making the changes we agreed to following the Disability Royal Commission.

This recommendation is in progress.

12.5 A nationally consistent approach to data collection

Recommendation 12.5 said governments should develop a nationally consistent approach

to collecting disability information.

Disability Ministers are working together to progress Recommendation 12.5 on how governments collect disability data in the same way across Australia.

On 3 December 2024, the Data Improvement Plan 2024 was published and included a Disability Royal Commission Action Plan.

It outlined the steps for improving disability data over the next 18 months.

The Australian Government is leading work on creating a short, standard set of questions to collect disability information in population surveys.

This includes reviewing current questions, talking to the disability community, experts, and government agencies, and testing new questions.

A report with findings and recommendations is expected to be finalised this year.

The National Disability Data Asset brings together government data from across Australia.

It helps governments to better understand and meet the needs of people with disability.

The data asset contains disability flags.

The first set of flags were made in late 2024.

The disability flags will be improved over time to include more people with disability.

This recommendation is in progress.
