Collection of your personal information
Your personal information is protected by law, including the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles. Miroma Project Factory (contracted by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing (department) to develop the My QuitBuddy application) collects the information that you provide, as set out below. Miroma Project Factory does not intend to use that information to identify you.
The department does not collect your personal information (unless you provide it through contacting the department as set out below).
Types of personal information collected
Miroma Project Factory collects the following information:
- the information you provide when first using the app.
- a nickname (but when the app asks what you would like to be called, you do not need to provide your real name, and this information stays on your device and is not provided to the department);
- your gender – which you can choose not to answer;
- whether or not you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, which you can choose not to answer;
- whether or not you identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, which you can choose not to answer;
- your year of birth;
- your location, which you can choose not to answer, including your postcode (if you are in Australia);
- information about your smoking/vaping preferences, including your quit date and time; how frequently you smoked/vaped; how long you have smoked/vaped, how much you spend on cigarettes/e-cigarettes on average; and
- information you choose to provide including any other tools you might use, your goals and motivations to quit, cravings and withdrawal symptoms, and challenges you set yourself as part of your quit journey.
- the content of any electronic forms you submit via the My QuitBuddy app, requesting us to provide services or information, or take actions;
- information submitted if you participate in a survey; and
- any message you post on the Community Page (refer to the Community Page Use Policy)
- any information you share through an infographic tile that displays your quitting progress (days without smoking/vaping, number of cigarettes not smoked and estimated amount of money saved from not smoking/vaping). You can choose to share the infographic tile as an image online or via email or SMS. However, the infographic tile will not contain your name or any other identifying information unless you choose to add it.
The Miroma Project Factory also makes a record of visits to the My QuitBuddy app and logs the following information for statistical purposes:
- the date and time of access;
- the pages accessed and actions taken (e.g., buttons pressed);
- the permissions you provide regarding alerts;
- the data you enter as part of you profile (as set out above);
- the information you provide to tailor your profile (as set out above); and
- any additional information you provide, such as the act of journaling, creating danger times, setting a savings target, creating a personal challenge and your display preferences such as dark mode.
Miroma Project Factory does not collect any photos, messages or recordings you make in the app; these are only retained on the device you are using.
You can also use the My QuitBuddy app to submit messages to the department or send messages to mailing addresses, email addresses, social media accounts or other contact mechanisms displayed on My QuitBuddy app. While the department does not intend that these messages will contain personal information, it is possible that you could include personal information such as your name, email address and telephone number in these messages.
Purpose of collection
Miroma Project Factory collects your personal information for the purposes of delivering the My QuitBuddy app service to you. Miroma Project Factory may also use your personal information for analytics purposes and for the purposes of improving the My QuitBuddy app.
As set out above, the department does not collect your personal information. All information that the department receives from Miroma Project Factory is aggregated and deidentified. The department may use the deidentified data that it receives from Miroma Project Factory for purposes such as evaluating the effectiveness of the My QuitBuddy app and informing government policy.
If you do not provide your personal information
If you do not provide some or all of this information, the department may not be able to provide the full range of services available through the My QuitBuddy app.
Overseas disclosure of your personal information
As set out above, the department does not collect your personal information.
Information that you provide to Miroma Project Factory may be disclosed to overseas recipients in the United States and the European Union, for analytics purposes.
Consent to collection of your sensitive information
By providing your sensitive information, as set out above, you consent to Miroma Project Factory collecting your Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island status, pregnancy status, and smoking and vaping information for the purposes indicated above.
