Medicare, provider numbers and overseas travel

Medicare benefits can only be claimed for services provided in Australia. Protect your provider number, and never use it for overseas services or let others claim under it while you’re away.

Under the Health Insurance Act 1973, Medicare benefits can only be paid for services performed in Australia to an eligible person. Both the provider and the patient must be physically located within Australia, including for telehealth.

This educational resource has been developed to give health providers general guidance on managing their provider number when travelling overseas.
