About alternative commissioning
The purpose of alternative commissioning is to develop different ways to improve availability and quality of services in geographically thin markets, such as regional, rural and remote areas.
Alternative commissioning pilot
The NDIS Alternative Commissioning pilot was developed in response to recommendations from the NDIS Review (2023).
The pilot took place in Maningrida, Northern Territory, and Katanning and surrounding areas in Western Australia.
The pilot focused on flexible, place-based approaches to improve access to disability supports.
The pilot ended on 30 June 2025.
The Australian National University (ANU) independently monitored and evaluated the pilot in both locations.
The evaluation findings have been published, including a plain English version of the evaluation report.
