What you need to know
Under section 92 of the National Health Act 1953, a medical practitioner can apply for approval to supply PBS medicines. This can only be in areas where there are no approved pharmacists supplying PBS medicines from an approved pharmacy. These are typically remote or isolated areas without convenient community access to pharmaceutical services.
To apply for approval to supply PBS medicines, the medical practitioner must:
- be practising medicine in the area where they are seeking approval
- hold a current registration with the relevant state or territory medical board
- be willing to supply PBS medicines to any person in that area who presents a valid PBS prescription.
If an approved pharmacist establishes a pharmacy in the area and can supply PBS medicines to the community, we will cancel the medical practitioner’s approval.
