Stronger shared stewardship of the whole health system

Objective 2 of the National Health Reform Agreement (NHRA) focuses on making it easier for people to move between different types of care, creating a system to check how well health services are working, and planning for the future health workforce.

The 2026–2031 NHRA Addendum states that all governments in Australia need to work together to provide people with good health care. Everyone has a role to play, and to make this happen, governments are planning these changes.

Making it easier for people to move between different types of care

Both governments and community members want health, aged care, and disability services to work together better, especially when someone moves from one type of care to another.

This will be supported by stronger governance and planning at local, state, and national levels.

Creating a system to check how well health services are working

A way to measure how different parts of the health system work together will be developed.

This will help governments understand what needs improvement and how to use money and resources wisely.

Planning for the future health workforce

Governments will focus on making sure Australia has enough trained health workers, now and in the future.

This includes national workforce planning across all health professions so every community can get the care they need.
