Why it is important
Dementia affects a growing number of Australians and has a significant impact on our community. By 2065, up to 1.1 million people are expected to be living with dementia.
A dementia diagnosis or symptoms of cognitive decline can be overwhelming and life-changing, so timely access to appropriate supports and resources is vital.
People living with dementia and their carers can also experience loneliness and social isolation. Stigma and discrimination can make this worse and limit their ability to stay connected with others.
Isolation can affect mental health, including increasing anxiety and depression. This may also worsen the symptoms of dementia. With the right support, people living with dementia can stay active, connected and involved in their communities.
The NDSP helps provide this support for people living with dementia, as well as their families and carers.
Goals
The NDSP aims to:

- connect people with services that help them to live well with dementia for as long as possible
- support the health and aged care sectors to respond to increasing rates of dementia in the community
- build awareness, understanding and inclusion in the broader community.
