About the Multi-Purpose Service Program

The Multi-Purpose Service Program (MPSP) provides integrated health and aged care services for older people living in rural and remote Australia.

About the MPSP

The MPSP provides integrated health and aged care services for older people living in rural and remote Australia. It is available in all states, the Northern Territory and Norfolk Island.

There are more than 180 Multi-Purpose Services (MPS) across Australia. They operate in areas that cannot support both a hospital and a separate aged care home. This means older people can stay in their own communities and closer to family and friends.

The MPSP gives rural and remote communities:

  • improved access to quality and safe health and aged care services that meet community needs
  • innovative, flexible and integrated service delivery
  • flexible use of funding and infrastructure
  • improved cost-effectiveness and long-term service viability.

The MPSP is a joint initiative of the Australian Government and state and territory governments. The Australian government fund the delivery of aged care services, while state and territory governments fund the delivery of health services.

Who can access the program

If you are an older person living in a small rural or remote community, you can access aged care services from a MPS if you are eligible to access funded aged care services.

Information about applying for aged care services is available on My Aged Care.

Services that can be delivered under the MPSP

All MPS deliver permanent residential care services. Some also offer residential respite services, or can deliver services to older people in their home or local community under the MPSP.

To find out more about what your local MPS, use the Find a Provider tool on My Aged Care.

You should also reach out to your local MPS for information about what services they offer, current availability and any fees or charges that apply. General information is available in our fact sheets.

Fees and charges under the MPSP

If you can afford to, older people accessing aged care services from an MPSP provider may be expected to help with the cost by paying fees. It is important to understand that MPSP fees are different to other aged care fee arrangements.
