About the 10-year Investment Plan
The MRFF 10-year Investment Plan provides funding for 22 initiatives to support:
- lifesaving research
- job creation
- local industry
- growing Australia’s reputation as a world leader in medical research.
The plan provides flexibility for the MRFF to respond to emerging health challenges while focusing on addressing key health challenges.
It also provides the mechanism for implementing the current Australian Medical Research and Innovation Strategy and the related Priorities. Together, these documents support decision-making on how to use MRFF funds.
About the MRFF 3rd 10-year Investment Plan
The Australian Government announced the $6.5 billion MRFF 3rd 10-year Investment Plan (2024–25 to 2033–34) in the 2024–25 Budget.
The MRFF 3rd 10-year Investment Plan:
- builds on investments made through previous MRFF 10-year Investment Plans
- updates and refine existing programs
- provides targeted investments in new and emerging health priorities.
The plan carries forward commitments made through prior MRFF 10-year Investment Plans and commits an additional expenditure of $1.4 billion.
MRFF 3rd 10-year Investment Plan (2024–25 to 2033–34)
The Australian Government announced the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) 3rd 10-year Investment Plan in the 2024–25 Budget. The $6.5 billion investment plan updates and replaces the 2nd 10-year Investment Plan.

Medical Research Future Fund 2nd 10-year Investment Plan (2022–23 to 2031–32)
The $6.3 billion MRFF 2nd 10-year Investment Plan outlines the Australian Government’s plans for the use of MRFF funding from 2022–23 to 2031–32. It updates and builds on the first 10-year Investment Plan.
Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) 1st 10-year Investment Plan (2018–19 to 2027–28)
The Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) 1st 10-year Investment Plan was announced in the 2019–20 Budget. The $5.1 billion commitment supported lifesaving research and reaffirmed Australia’s reputation as a world leader in medical research. It has now been replaced by the 2nd 10-year Investment Plan.
