About the Precision Health Research Program
The Precision Health Research Program will provide $200 million from 2027–28. It will support national research collaboration between researchers, healthcare providers, government and consumers across the sector to:
- recruit a large and diverse cohort of Australians for genomic sequencing and provide participants with genomic insights into their own health
- create a secure national genomic data resource to support research, innovation, clinical trials and personalised care
- build the evidence and capability needed to safely and responsibly integrate genomics into routine Australian health care.
Why it is important
Genomics can help identify disease risk earlier. It can also support more personalised prevention and care. To deliver these benefits fairly, genomic data must reflect Australia’s diverse population.
Current genomic datasets do not represent all Australian communities well. This can make genomic information less accurate and less useful for some people.
The Precision Health Research Program will support the development of a secure national genomic data resource from a large and diverse group of Australians. The resource will enable research, improve understanding of genetic variation across the population, and strengthen evidence for genomic health care.
The program will also support culturally safe engagement and participation. This will help build community trust and ensure the benefits of genomic research are shared more fairly across Australia.
Objectives
The objectives of this program are to build the evidence, capability and capacity for sustained integration of genomics into Australian health care.
We will award funding through a competitive Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) grant opportunity.
We will develop the grant opportunity in partnership with Genomics Australia.
We expect funding to commence in 2027–28.

We will monitor the program in accordance with the principles and approach detailed in the MRFF Monitoring, evaluation and learning strategy.
Who we work with
The Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) funds the program.
We will deliver this program in partnership with Genomics Australia.
Our Health and Medical Research Office oversees this and other MRFF initiatives.
