Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Conditions Mission

The Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Conditions Mission is investing $100 million to fund research that will improve the lives of Australians living with these debilitating conditions.

About the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Conditions Mission

The Mission will invest $100 million over 10 years from 2028–29 to fund research that will improve the lives of people with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions.

Why it is important

Arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions represent a significant and growing health challenge in Australia. Around one in three Australians live with a chronic musculoskeletal condition.

These conditions place a substantial burden on individuals, families, the health system and the economy. Demand for treatment and care services is expected to increase as Australia’s population ages.

The Mission responds to the need for a more coordinated and strategic approach to research in this area.

Objectives

The objective of the Mission is to:

  • accelerate the generation of new knowledge
  • translate research into the prevention, diagnosis and implementation of best practice care for Australians with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions.

Meeting our objectives

We will monitor the Mission in accordance with the principles and approach detailed in the MRFF Monitoring, evaluation and learning strategy
