Work of the Interim First Nations Aged Care Commissioner

The Interim First Nations Aged Care Commissioner works across the aged care system to advocate for greater access to culturally safe, trauma-aware and healing informed aged care that meets the unique needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia.

Background

Ms Kelly was appointed as the Interim First Nations Aged Care Commissioner in January 2024. This appointment was made in response to recommendation 49 of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

Achievements

In February 2025, Andrea Kelly released her report to government on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ experiences with the aged care system. Transforming aged care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people was based on Ms Kelly’s consultations with community in the first half of 2024.

Ms Kelly also released an illustrated booklet, which was distributed to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and everybody she met with to summarise what was heard, in a more relatable and accessible way than the report.

The Interim First Nations Aged Care Commissioner makes submissions across many forums on a broad range of matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander aged care.
