Indigenous Internship

If you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student, you can now apply for our Indigenous Internship.

About the program

The program supports Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students to get work experience in the Australian Public Service (APS) while completing their degree. 

This helps them to:

  • develop practical workforce skills to improve future employment prospects
  • have a career pathway with us and the APS.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the program, you must:

  • be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • be studying a university degree for the duration of the internship
  • be an Australian citizen.

How it works

Interns commence at an APS2 classification on a non-ongoing employment contract. 

You must complete 10 weeks or a total of 375 work hours within a 12-month period. 

You can tailor your work schedule to suit your study schedule. For example, you can work: 

  • 37.5 hours per week (standard weekly full-time hours)
  • part time hours
  • one day a fortnight.

You and your workplace supervisor must agree to the schedule.
