About the program
The Health Workforce Scholarship Program provides funding to the health workforce in rural areas to help upskill participants through professional development and training that will benefit your community.
HWSP funding provides support for the costs of completing postgraduate courses, short courses, workshops, conferences and seminars.
Health Workforce Scholarship Program funding is available to health professionals in these sectors:
- medical
- nursing
- midwifery
- allied health
- dental
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health professionals in the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS)
- non-government organisations
- private practice.
Scholarships and bursaries are prioritised to address local needs and increase the skills and capacity and/or scope of practice of existing health professionals. Most scholarships include a return of service obligation.
Goals
The program aims to:
- continue to provide the flexibility that is needed to increase access to health services in areas that are experiencing skill shortages
- provide incentives to health professionals committed to rural service
- meet changes in supply and demand for particular health services of medical practice
Who we work with
The Rural Workforce Agencies (RWAs) administer the HWSP on our behalf. RWAs operate in each state and the Northern Territory.
