24/7 registered nurse requirement

At least one registered nurse (RN) must be onsite and on duty at all times at each approved residential care home. This is called the 24/7 RN requirement.

About the 24/7 RN requirement

You must ensure at least one RN is onsite and on duty at all times, at each approved residential care home you operate.

Eligible approved residential care homes in rural and remote areas can apply for an exemption for up to 12 months at a time.

Why it is important

The 24/7 RN requirement was introduced in response to recommendation 86 of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and is important because:

  • ensures qualified and experienced care staff are available to identify and address risks
  • improves resident safety
  • gives residents better access to clinical care in their approved residential care home
  • prevents unnecessary trips to hospital emergency rooms.

24/7 RN supplement

The 24/7 RN supplement helps you employ extra RNs to meet the requirement to have an RN onsite and on duty at all times.

Reporting

You must report about your RN coverage at each of your homes each calendar month through the Government Provider Management System (GPMS).
