About the review
The review of the BreastScreen Australia Program is now complete.
Consultants including Abt Associates, Health Consult and Deloitte undertook key activities to inform the Final Report. The Final Report was led by Health Consult with oversight from, and recommendations endorsed by, a multidisciplinary Expert Advisory Group.
The BreastScreen Australia Program was reviewed to explore ways to modernise and strengthen the national breast cancer screening service.
What we did:
- Reviewed screening policies using the latest evidence
- Evaluated quality and safety mechanisms across the program
- Explored personalised screening approaches to better meet the needs of women
- Analysed the funding model to support future innovation and sustainability
- Examined equity and access especially for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and culturally diverse communities
- Undertook extensive consultation to identify the priorities and expectations of a range of key stakeholders in relation to breast cancer screening.
The Review provided recommendations to improve the BreastScreen Australia program. All Governments will consider the recommendation and how they can help shape the future direction of BreastScreen Australia and inform evidence based change over time.
We asked for input at different stages of the review to make sure many viewpoints were heard. We received a lot of feedback through public submissions, targeted workshops, and discussions with the BreastScreen Australia Review Expert Advisory Group.
Next Steps
The Final Report and recommendations are currently with all Australian governments for consideration. The Final Report will be released publicly in due course.
