Generational reform across aged care
The Australian Government has:
- introduced the Aged Care Bill 2024 to Parliament
- released its response to the Aged Care Taskforce
- published details of the Support at Home program.

The Australian Government introduced the Aged Care Bill 2024 to Parliament on 12 September 2024.
The Bill is for a new Aged Care Act – the main law that sets out how the aged care system operates. It aims to:
- improve the lives of older people accessing aged care services in their homes, community settings and residential aged care homes
- encourage aged care providers to deliver high-quality care.
The new Aged Care Act is expected to commence on 1 July 2025.

The Bill also responds to the Aged Care Taskforce to sustainably fund aged care into the future. It will establish a strong, new regulatory framework for aged care and deliver the new Support at Home program.
About the Aged Care Taskforce
The Aged Care Taskforce reviewed funding arrangements for aged care and developed options for a system that is fair and equitable for everyone in Australia.
The final report of the Aged Care Taskforce was published in March 2024.

About the Support at Home program
We are reforming in-home aged care to help older people live independently at home for longer.
From 1 July 2025, Support at Home will replace the existing Home Care Packages Program and Short-Term Restorative Care (STRC) Programme.
The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) will transition to Support at Home no earlier than 1 July 2027.
The final Support at Home program design is now available.
