Australia hosted the spectacular FIBA Women’s World Cup 2022 last month. It was the most attended women’s basketball world cup in the competition’s history! Almost 150,000 basketball fans turned out for the 10-day event held in Sydney from 22 September to 1 October 2022.
As an exciting legacy from the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022, the She Hoops initiative seeks to empower women in basketball. She Hoops is an inclusive and safe initiative for all women involved – from community through to high performance.
The initiative developed by Basketball Australia and the Australian Government aims to:
- create a community for women in basketball
- help women feel connected and supported through the pathways available in the sport.
Australian Hall of Famer, Lauren Jackson, was instrumental in creating the She Hoops initiative. It is part of her ongoing commitment to develop the sport for women.
Minister Wells supports the initiative saying:
We must do more to help women who love sport, stay in sport, and become better athletes, referees, administrators and people. I commend Lauren Jackson and Basketball Australia for this initiative that will help females in sport stay connected and develop their passion, while allowing them to have long successful careers on and off field
