In May 2024, the Australian Government announced the development of a National Strategy to provide national direction, fill any gaps and attract researchers and investors to Australia.
In November 2024, the government appointed Ms Rosemary Huxtable AO PSM as chair of the National Strategy.
In March 2026, Ms Huxtable provided the National Strategy to government after consulting with stakeholders and collaborating with the National Health and Medical Research Strategy Interdepartmental Committee.
In the 2026-27 Budget, the Australian Government announced about $500 million over the next 4 years to increase investment in medical research through the MRFF. Investment will grow each year from 2026-27, with grant funding to reach $1 billion a year by 2030-31.
The government has also announced the release of the National Strategy and further details on MRFF investment priorities. The research priorities have been selected as high value initial investments guided by the National Strategy.
