In May 2024, the Australian Government announced the development of a National Strategy to provide national direction, fill any gaps and attract researchers and investors to Australia.
In November 2024, the government appointed Ms Rosemary Huxtable AO PSM as chair of the National Strategy.
In March 2026, Ms Huxtable provided the National Strategy to government after consulting with stakeholders and collaborating with the National Health and Medical Research Strategy Interdepartmental Committee.
As announced in the 2026-27 Budget, health and medical researchers will benefit from the government’s $508.5 million investment in the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) over the next 4 years. Grant funding will reach $1 billion a year by 2030-2031.
The government has announced the release of the National Strategy and further details on MRFF investment priorities. The research priorities have been selected as high value initial investments guided by the National Strategy.
