The National Rural Health Commissioner and her Office congratulate the signatories on the release of the updated Framework, which replaces the original version published in 2008.

The updated Framework outlines key principles and strategies to support high-quality maternity care in rural and remote areas of Australia.

This update follows the National Rural Maternity Forum held in 2023, where experts identified the need to review and refresh the original Framework. The Office supported the facilitation of this work in partnership with an Expert Advisory Group, known as the signatories.

 Why Rural Maternity Services Matter

Rural maternity services help families stay close to home. They support strong, connected communities and give babies a safe and healthy start in life. These services also help rural towns grow and remain sustainable.

“An updated Framework was needed to ensure rural and remote maternity care remains a priority, so that women and babies in these communities receive the equitable care they deserve” said Professor Jenny May, National Rural Health Commissioner.

The Office recognises and commends the collaborative efforts of all signatories. Their shared commitment to improving maternity care for rural and remote families is reflected in this updated Framework.
