Appointment marks a new era for medical research leadership

The Australian Government has announced that Professor Kathryn North AC will head the Australian Medical Research Advisory Board (AMRAB). AMRAB is the independent panel of experts that sets the strategy and priorities for the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).

The Australian Government chooses the members of AMRAB carefully to ensure the board has the right skills and experience to guide MRFF spending. Members have all contributed to research outcomes and are committed to advancing Australia's research potential.

Professor North is a distinguished paediatric physician, neurologist and clinical geneticist, recognised for her leadership in research translation and genomic medicine. In 2019, she received one of Australia’s highest awards, Companion (AC) of the Order of Australia, for her service to genomic medicine and medical research.

Professor North was appointed following an open nomination process. She replaces Professor Ian Frazer AC who stepped down as Chair of AMRAB in February 2025.
