$19 million for research using mRNA to prevent cancer and treat disease

The Australian Government is investing over $19 million into research that uses mRNA – the medical technology that underpins the Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines. Funding is from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).

Six research projects using mRNA will receive funding under the MRFF’s National Critical Research Infrastructure initiative

This investment will support:

  • a new mRNA vaccine that prevents urinary tract infections by teaching the body’s immune system to recognise and fight E. coli 
  • infrastructure that develops, tests and evaluates mRNA therapies and vaccines that prevent cancer.
