Every older person has the right to:
- communicate in the language or method they prefer
- receive information in a way they understand
- participate in decisions about their care.
To mark National Week of Deaf People (21–27 September) and International Sign Language Day (23 September), we’re encouraging providers to consider how they support accessible, person-centred communication.
The NSLP is one way you can help meet the communication needs of Deaf, Deafblind and hard of hearing older people.
Services available through the NSLP
The NSLP is a government-funded program that provides free:
- face-to-face and video remote sign language interpreting
- sign language services, such as Auslan and First Nations languages
- tactile signing and hand-over-hand signing for Deafblind people
- live captioning onsite or remotely.
Services are available 7 days a week, including outside business hours and during emergencies when required.
When to use the NLSP
You can use NSLP services when an eligible older person needs communication support to participate in:
- aged care assessments, care planning and review discussions
- health and medical appointments (that attract a Medicare rebate)
- banking, budgeting, housing and other essential appointments
- cultural, community and social activities.
