This marks an important milestone as the CDC prepares to commence as a standalone national public health institution.

The CDC has been established following many years of work across the health system to strengthen Australia’s preparedness, surveillance and coordination in response to public health threats. More recently, teams across the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing have worked closely with interim CDC colleagues to put in place the foundations required for the CDC’s transition to full operation from 1 January 2026.

Professor Wainer brings more than two decades of leadership experience across government, health care, academia and global health. Her appointment will support the CDC as it moves into its next phase – building national capability, strengthening partnerships with jurisdictions and communities, and delivering transparent, evidence-based public health advice.

Professor Wainer will formally commence in the role on 1 March 2026. Until then, Paul McCormack will continue as Acting Director-General to ensure continuity of leadership and a smooth transition.

We look forward to continuing to work closely with the CDC as it establishes itself as Australia’s national public health authority.
