The Australian Government is delivering Australia’s first perimenopause and menopause clinical guidelines to ensure women in Australia and healthcare professionals have trusted, evidence-based advice to support this important stage of life.
The Government has engaged the Living Evidence Collaboration (ALEC) at Monash University to lead the development of Australia’s first national clinical guidelines for perimenopause and menopause. ALEC is currently seeking engagement from relevant health professional bodies.
Perimenopause and menopause affect millions of Australian women and can have a significant impact on health, wellbeing and daily life. The new guidelines will provide healthcare professionals with evidence-based guidance to support women.
The guidelines will be developed in partnership with the Australasian Menopause Society (AMS), the Endocrine Society of Australia (ESA), Jean Hailes for Women’s Health (Jean Hailes) and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS).
Consultation and engagement will also be undertaken with peak health professional bodies across Australia whose members provide clinical care to women during perimenopause and menopause.
Importantly, these 'living' guidelines will be regularly updated as new evidence emerges ensuring clinicians have access to the latest research and best-practice advice.
The Australian Perimenopause and Menopause Guidelines will be developed in accordance with established National Health and Medical Research Council processes.
The 2025–26 Budget provided funding of $2.9 million over three years from 2025–26 to support the development of the national guidelines.
This work builds on the Australian Government’s landmark Women’s Health Package that includes new Medicare-supported menopause health assessments, cheaper menopause treatments through the PBS, 33 Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Clinics delivering menopause and perimenopause care and Australia's first national Menopause and Australia’s first national Menopause and Perimenopause Awareness Campaign.
