The Albanese Government welcomes today’s announcement of the expected sale of South Australian NDIS provider Bedford to The Disability Trust, a reputable not-for-profit disability service provider.
Bedford has appointed McGrathNicol as voluntary administrators to oversee the process and who will continue operating all sites, ensuring continuity for the more than 1,250 people with disability across South Australia who are employed by or receive supports from Bedford.
To ensure a smooth transition, our government will provide an additional $13.2 million to support the expected sale and continuation of supported employment and programs for people with disability.
For more than 80 years the services and opportunities provided by Bedford have been highly valued by employees and their families.
Since Bedford advised it could not continue without a restructure and sale, the Albanese government’s priority has been to ensure ongoing support for NDIS participants and to protect supported employment jobs.
Today’s funding announcement brings the Commonwealth’s commitment to $17.6 million, in addition to the ongoing funding Bedford receives as a registered NDIS provider.
The South Australian Government will also provide a portion of Crown Land at Bedford’s Panorama site to the Disability Trust for no consideration, bringing total state government support for the Bedford transition to $21 million.
This process has been a genuine partnership between the Commonwealth and South Australian governments, Bedford’s management and McGrathNicol as restructuring advisors, and creditors, including the NAB.
Final details of sale are subject to creditor approval, but with this additional contribution from both levels of government, our expectation is that there will be long term continuity of services for Bedford, which has been in operation for 80 years.
The government will continue to work with everyone involved in the transition to make sure NDIS participants continue to receive the support they need with the least possible disruption.
People with disability and families who have any concerns can contact the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission on 1800 035 544.
