The Liberal National Government will invest $6 million that will enable Cabrini Health to establish a new Institute of Cancer at its Malvern site, allowing researchers and clinicians to work together towards life-saving breakthroughs.
The Government will provide:
- $3 million to build a non-profit state-of-the-art Research Institute of Cancer to advancetranslational cancer research and delivering better health outcomes;
- $2 million for a Cabrini Cancer Wellness and Exercise Centre, which will have an emphasison exercise in its delivery of wellness services; and
- $1 million towards South East Melbourne Cancer Research and Treatment Outreach, apartnership with Monash Partners and Peninsula Health at Rosebud Hospital which will setup a tertiary referral and satellite research centre in oncology.
Minister for Health, Greg Hunt said it is expected that that the number of patients on clinical trials will increase by over 180 participants as a result of the funding.
“The Cabrini Research Institute of Cancer will be integrated within Cabrini’s Malvern hospital, enabling researchers and clinicians to work together, giving them the best chance of developing breakthroughs and delivering better health outcomes for patients,” Minister Hunt said.
Minister for Jobs and Industrial Relations, the Kelly O’Dwyer said she was hopeful that the new facility would save lives.
“Sadly, 48,000 people died from cancer last year. I’m so proud that our local hospital will play a world-leading role in research which will lead to better clinical care and hopefully a cure,” Minister O’Dwyer said.
“If we don’t invest adequately in research, we are condemning tomorrow’s generation to today’s treatments.”
Liberal candidate for Higgins, Katie Allen, is a doctor and medical researcher and previously served as a Director of Cabrini Health. Katie Allen said she looked forward to seeing the world-leading research that will be possible at the new Institute.
“Bringing radiotherapy, day oncology, emergency medicine, operating theatres and palliative care under the same roof will ensure better research can be conducted,” Ms Allen said.
The Liberal National Government’s strong economic management ensures the continued record investment of funding into vital health initiatives including mental health, life-saving medicines, Medicare and hospitals.
