Australia’s athletes will benefit from a stronger sporting partnership under a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed today by the Australian and Singaporean Governments.

I met with the Minister for Culture, Community and Youth of Singapore, Ms Grace Fu, today and signed the MoU to further strengthen the healthy sporting relationship between our two countries.

“We look forward to deepening cooperation and building stronger ties between Australia and Singapore. Australia is a sporting powerhouse with a rich sporting culture and tradition,” Minister Fu said.

“The opportunities for closer sport collaboration under the MOU is expected to contribute to the further development of Singapore’s sport ecosystem.”

This MoU sets out objectives to encourage cooperation, promote the exchange of sporting programs, experiences, skills, techniques and knowledge to support our athletes and the sporting sector more broadly.

This MoU also contributes to delivering the goals outlined in the Australian Sports Diplomacy Strategy 2015–18 which supports innovative sporting projects and partnerships between Australia and the Indo–Pacific region.

With significant sporting events on the agenda such as the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast next year, the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang in 2018 and the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020, strengthening relationships within our region directly benefits sport in our country and our athletes.

Australia has existing MoUs on sports cooperation with Spain, Cuba, Japan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and India. A MoU is currently being progressed with Germany.
