What is influenza?
Influenza, also known as the flu, is a very serious illness caused by the influenza virus. It can cause infection of the nose, throat and lungs and it can spread easily from person to person.
While flu can be mild for some, it can cause serious illness – sometimes leading to hospitalisation or even death. It can be really dangerous for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Why should I get the free flu vaccine?
The flu gets passed around as easily as a ball. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can get very sick from the flu. So, it’s important to encourage all your mob to get protected with a flu vaccination – it’s free for everyone aged 6 months and older.
It can protect you, your family, elders and community from getting really sick. It lowers the chance you’ll need to go to hospital if you get the flu.
If you are pregnant, the flu vaccine will also protect your baby against the flu, from birth for their first 6 months.
Let’s give flu the boot.
When should I get the free flu vaccine?
You should get your free flu vaccine every year from April onwards. It can protect you for the peak flu season - June to September. The highest level of protection happens in the first 3 to 4 months after vaccination.
It is never too late to get your free flu vaccination, as influenza can be in the community all year round.
Where can I get the flu vaccine?
You can get the flu vaccine at your local Aboriginal Medical Service (AMS), general practice, immunisation clinic or pharmacy. The flu vaccine is free for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 6 months and older. Have a yarn to your health professional for more information.
